The Greatest Need
The culture sees religion in general and Christianity specifically as a set of rules and principles people are supposed to follow. But as we look at scripture and the way God relates to His people, we should be known for something completely different: His presence.
The reason so many are put off by Christianity is that the church is to focused on behavior modification, rather than having a real encounter with the Creator of the universe. The two approaches are massively difference.
Now, let me say that we should live moral and upright lives but we must be careful not to make this the central theme of our faith. The one thing that belongs at the center of our faith is Jesus; who He is, what He has done, and what He offers to anyone who believes. A.W. Tozer said: “I want the presence of God Himself, or I don’t want anything at all to do with religion.”
The great need in the church isn’t a trendier, glitzier presentation of Christianity. It’s not to be more involved in social justice or solving the world’s problems. It’s not even better-behaved Christians. The greatest need in the church is God Himself. We cannot be defined by mere principles. We need His presence more than anything.
