Everlasting Love

Jeremiah 31:3 …I’ve loved you with an everlasting love; therefore, I have continued to extend faithful love to you.

Jeremiah is known as the weeping prophet. Most of his book is filled with proclamations of coming judgment. So, it is a heavy book to read. But in chapter 31 Jeremiah is writing about a future time when God will bless the nation.
Here God describes His love as an everlasting love. The reason His love is everlasting is because He is immutable. He never changes, which brings us hope and peace.
But while His immutability brings us hope it traumatizes the world. The world hopes that God will change, that He will relax His standards but the fact is, He never changes.
He can’t change. He can’t improve because He is already perfect. He can’t get worse because He is holy. He can’t get smarter because He knows everything. He can’t get dumber because He can’t forget. He is immutable, He does not change.
The unbelieving world hates that His standards abide forever. The world hates His pro-life stance, His position on same sex marriage, His attitude on greed and righteousness. And it hates His sovereignty. He doesn’t run for a four year term and then have to be re-elected. The world hates all that. His immutability is a tremendous threat to the world’s standards.
If you bend the knee to Him you will receive eternal life. But if you rebel against Him you will have eternal damnation. His standard never changes.
And so for us His immutability, His everlasting love and faithfulness give us rest and security.
