Overwhelmingly Overwhelmed?

Overwhelmingly Overwhelmed?

Do you ever experience times when you feel completely overwhelmed by so many tasks that need to be accomplished? Do you feel alone on a small island where it seems like there is no relief on the horizon? Do you feel as if you are beyond treading water and are actively sinking?
How can we deal with being overwhelmed? How can we overcome the anxiety that these situations produce?

Psalm 121:1-3 (ESV)
I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. 3 He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber.

We may not be pilgrimaging to Jerusalem, but this Psalm still gives us strength and encouragement. The Psalmist is asking us to lift our eyes. When we get overwhelmed, it is easy to avert our eyes and look down. But where do our eyes need to be directed?...UP...toward God, beyond the problems we face. We are not only to look but gaze and fix our eyes upon him. If we lift our yes, we can see the hills surrounding Jerusalem, we are under God's protective care. Our help is there! Our help is not me looking at my hands or my feet. I cannot, with my own strength, overcome the anxiety and pressure from, what seems to be, insurmountable tasks. My help is UP if I only lift my eyes.

The Lord made heaven AND earth. So, why would I think that I could get through on my own? When we feel as if wave after wave is pounding on us, remember that God is the solid ground. He is the rock which is feet are resting upon. He will not allow our feet to be moved.

Isaiah 41:10
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Isaiah 41:13
For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Fear not, I am the one who helps you.”

God is Commanding us to not be in fear, not to be anxious, and not to lose hope, because He gives us a promise that He is with us. What more can we ask for? God is our strength, but it is actually through His love for us that He is willing to help. He wants to help. We just need to lift up our eyes during these overwhelming situations and look to Him.

For me at work, there are times when I am being pulled in so many directions, and everything occurs at once, and everything requires an action. The stimuli are so overwhelming and anxiety-producing. It seems like I will never come afloat. But, I understand that God can give me the peace to focus and give me the strength to prioritize and help me accomplish what needs to be done. It is when we humbly submit ourselves and prayerfully lift our eyes to see God's lending hand, that we are then able to take one step forward at a time in the comfort and strength of our Lord.

Therefore, when it seems as if all odds are against you; when your children are running you ragged when work seems like nothing can go right...just remember that we live in the love of Christ and will be upheld in His strength.
